Smoky Gouda Grits and Shrimp

Smoky Gouda Grits and Shrimp

Rich, smoky cheese oatmeal topped with Creole barbecue shrimp. Perfect for Sunday dinner, brunch, or any comforting meal.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons of butter
  • 4 cups of vegetable broth
  • 1 / 4-1 / 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 / 4-1 / 2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup half and half *
  • 1.5 to 2 cups freshly grated Gouda cheese
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped green onion

Instructions

First, pierce several times with a fork and cook or microwave your sweet potato until fluffy.

Then, remove the skin and crush. Put aside.

Then bring a quart of vegetable broth and 2 cups of oatmeal to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Once boiling, reduce heat to lowest setting and simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often.

While the oatmeal is simmering, start working on your supplements.

I'm still drawn to shrimp and vegetables as you can probably tell already! These grains also taste delicious with eggs and bacon for breakfast. When it comes to grains, anything goes!

Once the oatmeal begins to absorb the broth, add half and half and stir until you have reached the bonus arm training territory.

After another five to ten minutes, add the sweet potato, butter, and any additional dairy product you want to achieve the perfect consistency. I like mine thick, but the delicate grains are great too!

Finally add your freshly grated Gouda and season with garlic powder and salt.

Mix well until smooth and creamy.

Stack your favorite toppings and garnish with chopped green onion.

Happy Cooking Time.

Recipe Notes

* the oatmeal will be ultra-soft; if you prefer a more gravy dish, don't hesitate to add more butter, broth and / or cream! Everything is fine!

Half and half consists of half of the cream of milk; you can buy it as is or make it yourself by mixing the two. You can also use milk or evaporated milk which has a thicker and creamier consistency than plain milk. Cream and half and half will make for richer, creamier and more authentic grains while milk and evaporated milk will lighten things up. Both work wonderfully, so pick your favorite!

Serve with fresh vegetables and sautéed shrimp for a meal!
