Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli

Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli

All the flavors of a philly cheese steak sandwich carefully wrapped in a baked pizza crust. Next time, I would probably omit the seasoning because the cold cuts and cheese added enough salt.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 green bell pepper sliced thin
  • 6 slices provolone cheese optional
  • 1 medium onion sliced thin
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 lb roast or sandwich steak sliced thin
  • 1 small jar sliced mushrooms
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Pre-made Pizza Dough one pizza dough makes 2 Strombolis
  • 2 jalapenos seeded washed, and sliced (optional, spicy)
  • 8 oz mozzarella cheese shredded or sliced

Instructions

First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Heat a large saucepan over medium / high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of oil, place the steaks in the pan and sprinkle the steak with salt and pepper. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, then add the minced onions, the pepper and the mushrooms and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes or until the onions are lightly browned. Do not overcook the meat and vegetables as they will continue to cook in the oven.

Then, with a rolling pin, roll the dough out of a loaf into a rectangle about 9 X 13 inches. Pour the steak mixture in the center, making sure to leave about 1/2 inch from the edges of the dough flat so that the dough sticks when you roll it). Spread the cheese over the steak mixture then fold the sides and tuck in and roll the bread.

Place the bread, seam side down, on a greased baking sheet or aluminum foil. Beat an egg and brush the outside of the buns until it is completely covered with the egg, cut thin 2-inch strips on the top layer of the dough. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Cut and serve immediately with your favorite sauce. I like to use the ranch or the marinara. Happy Cooking Time.
