Smothered Chicken

Smothered Chicken

This smothered chicken recipe is made with juicy fried chicken breasts mixed in a savory sauce with crispy bacon. It truly is a restaurant-worthy meal at home!

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon of pepper
  • 2 pounds of chicken thighs, bone and skin
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 teaspoons of onion powder
  • 6 slices of bacon, diced
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 stick of butter, divided
  • 3 ½ cups of chicken broth

Instructions

First, cook the diced bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through. Place bacon in a paper towel-lined plate and set aside.

Then, while the bacon cooks, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning in a bowl or shallow dish.

Pat the chicken thighs dry with paper towels and drag the chicken on each side in the seasoned flour until coated. Shake off any excess flour and reserve the flour mixture for later.

Once the bacon is removed from the pan, add half the butter to the pan and let it melt.

When the butter is melted, add the flour coated chicken and cook, 4 to 5 minutes per side, until golden brown.

Remove the chicken to a plate and set aside.

Add the remaining butter to the pan and allow to melt.

Sprinkle a cup of the remaining seasoned flour in the pan and whisk for 1 minute until the butter and flour are combined.

Gradually stir in chicken broth and milk until sauce is smooth.

Return the cooked chicken and bacon to the pan.

Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Happy Cooking Time.
