Brown Butter Cinnamon Sugar Donuts
Homemade cinnamon sugar donuts make a delicious and easy breakfast hot from the oven. This recipe is easy to cook in thirty minutes or less with basic pantry ingredients and no frying.
Ingredients
For the Brown Butter Donuts:
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 and 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, browned
- 1/2 cup milk (I used whole milk but reduced-fat varieties should work fine)
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 and 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
For the brown butter donuts:
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees (F). Spray a 6 donut pan liberally with non-stick spray; put aside.
Then, place the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook the butter, stirring frequently, until it turns golden brown and gives off a slight nutty odor. Remove from the heat and set aside.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg; put aside. In another medium bowl, combine browned butter and sugar; beat well. Whisk the egg and vanilla. Stir in the milk.
Using a rubber spatula, gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, being careful not to over mix.
Spoon or pipe the donut batter into prepared pan and bake for 10 to 11 minutes, or until donuts bounce when lightly squeezed. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before gently unmolding them and transferring them to a cooling rack.
In the meantime, coat with cinnamon sugar.
For the cinnamon sugar coating:
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. You can also melt it in the microwave, if you like.
Once melted, transfer the butter to a large, shallow bowl and set aside. In another bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon; put aside.
Assembly:
When the donuts are cool enough to handle, dip them in the melted butter, making sure to coat both sides and edges well, then roll the donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Happy Cooking Time.
