Southern Barbecue Baked Beans
This
bean-style bean recipe from the South is packed with tons of flavors, smoky,
spicy and sweet in one bite. Adding smoked sausage, barbecue sauce, cayenne
pepper, brown sugar and a hint of ground ginger to name just a few ingredients
can add flavor to any can of regular baked beans.
Ingredients
- olive oil
- 2/3 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 3 Tbsp whole grain mustard
- seasoned salt & black pepper
- 2 28 oz cans hickory flavored baked beans
- 1 10 oz can chili seasoned tomatoes i.e. Rotel Chili Fixin's
- 1/2 medium green pepper finely diced
- 1 medium sweet onion finely diced
- 2 tsp barbecue seasoning i.e. Grill Mates Smokehouse Maple or Barbecue Magic
- 8 slices center cut bacon cooked and crumbled or 8 slices to lay on top
Instructions
First, preheat
the oven to 350 ° F.
Then, add a
few drops of olive oil to a 12-inch cast iron skillet or similar. or if you are
cooking bacon, use the cooking juices.
Sauté the
green pepper, onion and ground beef until there is no pink left in the beef.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste. After browning, drain any excess
fat from the pan before adding to the rest of the ingredients.
Combine
baked beans, barbecue sauce, chili tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce,
whole grain mustard and barbecue seasoning. Stir until the ingredients are well
mixed. [This is the point you would add cooked and crumbled bacon, if you
want.]
Place in the
oven and bake for 60 to 75 minutes.
Mix well and
let the beans stand for 5 to 10 minutes on the counter before serving to allow
the sauce to thicken.
Happy
Cooking Time.
