RICH ITALIAN HOT CHOCOLATE
This thick
Italian hot chocolate is the best hot chocolate you'll ever have, and you only
need 7 ingredients and 5 minutes to prepare it!
INGREDIENTS
- 4 tablespoons (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 cup whole milk, divided
- Whipped cream, optional for garnish
- Chocolate shavings, optional for garnish
- 1½ teaspoons cornstarch (reduce to 3/4 teaspoon if a thinner consistency is preferred)
- 4½ ounces/ 128 grams dark chocolate, callets or finely chopped from a bar*
INSTRUCTIONS
First, in a
heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together milk, cream and
sugar. Heat, whisking occasionally, until the mixture begins to bubble around
the edges.
Then, meanwhile,
in a small bowl or liquid measuring cup with spout, whisk together remaining
milk and cornstarch until smooth. As soon as the milk mixture is bubbling
around the edges, add the mixture of milk and cornstarch and beat until the
mixture is hot, about 1 minute.
Reduce the
heat to medium-low, then add the chocolate and whisk until completely dissolved
in the milk mixture and thick enough to cover a spoon, about 5 minutes.
Remove from
heat and pour into cups. Although this recipe fills 2 medium-sized cups, keep
in mind that it's super rich, so you can consider serving 4 half-cups instead.
Decorate with a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings, if
desired. Serve immediately as the drink will continue to thicken as it cools.
